Representing the final version of the Dragoon revolver series, the 3rd Model is recognizable by its oval trigger guard, rather than the square back versions of former models. It too used the rectangular cylinder stop notches with the bullet-shaped guides and the six locking pins at the breech. About 10,500 3rd Models were manufactured between 1851-1861. An issue revolver to the U.S. Dragoons and poplar with the civilian trade–especially in the California gold fields and other frontier locales where they sold for several times their eastern prices, the 6-shot, .44 caliber, 7 1/2-inch barreled, 3rd Model remained popular with the Texas Rangers and others, like James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok, who needed a powerful belt revolver.
With the scarcity of original Dragoons, Cimarron’s 3rd Model is an affordable and handsome lookalike of this much sought after six-shooter. Shooters will appreciate the Cimarron Dragoon’s authentic lines, the rich blued trigger, part octagon/part round barrel, and cylinder that continues the Dragoon’s “Ranger and Indian” roll-engraved cylinder scene, German silver blade front sight and notched hammer rear sight, color cased frame, hammer and loading lever, as well as the colorful brass back strap and trigger guard. If the “Prince of Pistoleers” liked it, you surely will!
